I'm not sure if this hapless soul was Wave Vidmar or not. I'd be surprised, but then I get surprised a lot these days. Either way, if you're thinking about making a solo sea kayak voyage from California to Hawaii, December may not be the most propitious time to get started. In fact, I'm not sure it even qualifies as a trip "to Hawaii," if you only make it 15 miles.
I'm not necessarily in a position to ridicule the efforts of others. After all, there was one time when I tried to solo paddle around Vancouver Island in winter, which I think many saw as something of a brainless undertaking. (I had to be rescued as well, but it was by my wife, not the Coast Guard, so it didn't make the papers.) Still, this guy - as yet unnamed - seems to be well outside my weight class.
Update - It was Wave Vidmar. Read Seaward's take on the incident here.

Man, I've been wondering what ever happened to him. I'll have to check out the links for the details.
15 miles, eh?
Hi Bryan,
Yeah, I was kind of wondering the same. My guess is there's a back story here that we may or may not ever hear. It's good he's safe but I wish the trip would have been a little more inspiring. Shame to lose such an amazing boat as well. (At least it sounds amazing.)
